"When my husband Chip and I bought our 1894 Colonial Revival home in Morristown in 1994, it had for many years been sadly neglected. But my husband, who is a car dealer, was more concerned with the fact that the home did not have a garage. How can a car dealer live in a house without a garage? The solution was, considering the age of our home, to design a garage attached to the rear of the home, that looked like an 1880s style carriage house, rather than just a garage.

"I designed a 6-car, 3-level garage, due to the steep grade in the rear yard. The doors were critical to the design, as they were very obvious from the street. If they did not look like operable carriage house doors and did not have the convenience of being an overhead door, the entire design would be fatally compromised.

"In 1994, there were many overhead doors on the market but they all looked like overhead doors -- three horizontal aluminum or fiber core panels, below a row of variously ugly windows above. I had nearly given up trying to locate an overhead door company that could build the doors I had designed, when I discovered Scott Hahn and his small custom garage door company in Roselle, NJ.

"Scott's lead carpenter did a beautiful job constructing the doors. They look as beautiful today as when they were installed 15 years ago, and unless you watched them roll up, you would expect the doors to open in the center just like an 1880s carriage house.

"In 2007, when we built our retirement home in Wayne County, PA, I designed a log home that is reminiscent of the Adirondack 'Great Camps' of the late 19th century.

"When it came time to design the doors for the garage, of course I thought of Hahn's. It was then that I realized that Scott had greatly expanded his business during the previous 15 years, and that he'd had to move the expanded factory to a new location in Branchburg, NJ.

"I designed all of the garage doors (sliding barn, overhead operating, and entry door) in the traditional chevron pattern with the traditional Adirondack red trim color. Scott Hahn and his team built them, painted them, and installed the overhead doors and their openers. Although it was a 3-hour drive to our property from his factory/showroom, the installation was completed quickly and professionally.
